Best Used Trucks Under $35,000

Need a truck for work or play? Here are the best used pickup trucks in Canada under $35,000, from midsize to full-size.

Trucks hold their value in Canada better than any other vehicle type, which means $35,000 doesn't buy as much truck as it used to. But if you know what to look for, you can still get a solid, capable pickup. Here are the best used trucks under $35,000.

Toyota Tacoma (2012–2017)

The Tacoma is the gold standard for midsize truck reliability. A 2012–2017 model with 100,000–150,000 km runs $25,000–$34,000. It holds value incredibly well, so even older models aren't cheap — but they last forever. Look for the 2.7L 4-cylinder for maximum reliability or the 3.5L V6 for more power.

Ford F-150 (2013–2017)

The F-150 has been Canada's best-selling vehicle for decades. A 2013–2017 model with the 5.0L V8 or 2.7L EcoBoost V6 runs $24,000–$34,000. Avoid the 3.5L EcoBoost from 2011–2013 (timing chain issues). The 2015+ aluminum body won't rust, which is huge in Canada.

Ram 1500 (2013–2018)

The Ram 1500 offers the most comfortable ride and best interior of any half-ton truck. A 2013–2018 model with the 5.7L Hemi V8 costs $23,000–$33,000. The 2013+ 8-speed transmission is a big improvement over earlier models. Watch for air suspension issues on higher-trim models.

GMC Canyon / Chevrolet Colorado (2015–2018)

These midsize twins returned to the market in 2015 and are excellent. A 2015–2018 model with the 3.6L V6 runs $24,000–$33,000. They're more capable than the Tacoma but less proven long-term. The diesel option gets incredible fuel economy but is rare used.

Nissan Frontier (2015–2019)

The Frontier is the value pick. It was essentially unchanged from 2005–2019, which means parts are cheap and every mechanic knows them. A 2015–2019 model with the 4.0L V6 runs $20,000–$28,000. It's not refined, but it's bulletproof.

What to check on a used truck

  • Tow package: Verify the wiring and cooler are present if you plan to tow
  • Bed liner: Check underneath for rust on the bed floor
  • Frame rust: This is the #1 killer of Canadian trucks — get under it and look
  • Transmission fluid: Should be changed every 60,000–100,000 km, especially if used for towing
  • CV axles and 4WD actuator: Engage 4WD during the test drive

Midsize vs. full-size

If you don't need to tow more than 3,000 kg, a midsize (Tacoma, Canyon, Colorado, Frontier) will save you $5,000–$8,000 and get better fuel economy. Full-size trucks are better for heavy towing and hauling but cost more to run.
