How Much Car Can I Afford?

Before you start shopping, figure out how much car you can actually afford. Here's a practical guide to setting your car budget in Canada.

The most common mistake car buyers make is shopping for a car before knowing what they can afford. Here's how to figure out your car budget in Canada.

The 20/4/10 rule

A widely used guideline for car affordability:

  • 20% down: Put at least 20% down to reduce your loan and avoid being underwater
  • 4-year term: Keep the loan to 48 months or less to minimize interest
  • 10% of gross income: Your total monthly car cost (payment + insurance + gas + maintenance) shouldn't exceed 10% of your gross monthly income

This is a conservative rule. Many Canadians stretch beyond it, but doing so increases financial risk.

A more practical approach

Let's say you make $60,000/year ($5,000/month gross). Here's how the math works:

10% rule: $500/month total car cost

  • Insurance: ~$150/month
  • Gas: ~$200/month
  • Maintenance: ~$50/month
  • Remaining for payment: ~$100/month — which only finances about $5,000–$6,000

That's very conservative. Most Canadians spend 15–20% of gross income on transportation. At 15% ($750/month), subtracting $400 for insurance, gas, and maintenance leaves $350 for a car payment — enough to finance about $18,000–$20,000 over 60 months at 6%.

Total cost of ownership

Don't just budget for the payment. A car costs:

ExpenseMonthly Estimate
Loan payment$300–$600
Insurance$120–$300
Fuel$150–$300
Maintenance$50–$150
Registration$10–$20
Total$630–$1,370

Factors that affect affordability

  • Your income: Higher income = more room, but don't let lifestyle creep push you into too much car
  • Existing debt: Student loans, credit cards, and other payments reduce what you can spend
  • Housing costs: High rent or mortgage means less for a car
  • Down payment: More down = smaller loan = lower payment
  • Credit score: Better score = lower rate = lower payment for the same car

Signs you're buying too much car

  • The payment is more than one week's take-home pay
  • You need a loan longer than 72 months to afford the payment
  • You can't afford a 20% down payment
  • You'd have to skip other financial goals (savings, debt repayment) to afford it
  • You're counting on overtime or bonuses to make the payment

Quick affordability calculator

  1. Calculate your monthly gross income
  2. Multiply by 0.15 (15% rule) — this is your total car budget
  3. Subtract $350 for insurance, gas, and maintenance
  4. The remainder is your maximum monthly payment
  5. At 6% interest over 60 months, multiply the payment by 50 to get your max loan amount

Example: $5,000/month gross × 0.15 = $750 − $350 = $400 payment × 50 = $20,000 max loan
